What do you love most about being a jewellery designer: I love that it’s a three dimensional form of art. And I can really treat it as mini sculptures or pieces of architecture. I can play around with materials and textures, form and colour. It’s very exciting and one size fits all 🙂
How did you choose the name for your jewellery line: It was my first association with jewellery, a gift from my grandmother when I was born, a pair of VALLIYAN ( which means hoop style earrings in my mother tongue which is Punjabi )
What materials do you like to use to create your pieces:
I love copper ! It’s one of the oldest metals used my man . It’s very versatile soft and malleable. It combines easily to make alloys. Its got a lot of minerals and good properties in its raw form the colour is just so beautiful.
Who is your favourite jewellery designer or your favourite jewellery brand:
David Webb ! It’s been my favourite for years and I’m obsessed with it till date because of the colours and the shapes I’m an Art Deco obsessed Colour freak !
What is your favourite quote about fashion
Fashion is a way of life. The way you eat, the way you host , the way you talk, the way you imagine, the way you dress, the way you holiday or go to work , the technology you use, everything from the walls of your home to what’s in your handbag. It’s all fashion and should come from within you.- Nitya Arora
What advice would you give to anyone who wanted to become a jewellery designer today
Be yourself ! Everyone else is taken. Originality is your key to true success.
Are there any fashion apps that help your business?
I wouldn’t say fashion apps in particular but INSTAGRAM is very integral to our business.
If you had to only wear one jewellery piece for the rest of your life what would it be.
It would be my wedding ring when I have one( lol) . For now it’s a diamond studded, gold Gubelin watch from my Grandmother bought for her by my Grandfather from Geneva in 1947.
What did you study at university and how does that play a part in your work
I studied Apparel design at Parsons School of Design New York. When we do ramp shows for the jewellery I make the clothes to complement the jewellery and the theme for the season. It also helps me style jewellery with the clothes for celebrities when stylists send me the looks of what they’re wearing.
Your pieces have been on so many celebrities in India. What have been some of your favourite looks from the past.
Some of my favourite and unforgettable ones have been Sonam Kapoor in our Princess Leah Ear cuffs with an Elie Saab dress in 2013. It was perfect!
